Class 4 MOTs for cars and vans up to 3,000kg

Class 4 covers most cars and people carriers, as well as vans with a design gross weight up to 3,000kg, which includes most small and medium panel vans.

If you drive a Ford Transit Custom, we can also check the wet belt while it’s in for its MOT.

Electric cars are also welcome at our MOT test centre in West Wellow.

Class 7 MOTs for larger vans

Class 7 MOTs are for petrol and diesel vans, including hybrids and heavier EVs, typically up to 3,500kg. That takes in a lot of long-wheelbase and high-roof vans, along with most Luton and dropside bodies. We’re approved for Class 7, which not every garage is, so if you run a larger van around Romsey or Southampton there’s no need to go further afield to get it tested.

The design gross weight is on your V5C logbook and on the manufacturer’s plate. If you’re not sure which class your van falls into, send us the registration and we’ll check it for you.

What does an MOT check?

The MOT checks that your vehicle meets the minimum road safety and emissions standards set by the DVSA. The main areas we look at are:

If anything fails or picks up an advisory, we’ll show you what we found and talk you through your options before any work goes ahead.

What happens if your vehicle fails its MOT?

If your vehicle fails, we can usually carry out the repairs here at the garage. Leave it with us and have it retested within 10 working days, and the partial retest is free.

If you take the vehicle away for repair and bring it back within 10 working days, it only needs a partial retest, which may carry a fee. Some items, such as bulbs and wipers, can be retested free if you bring the vehicle back before the end of the next working day.

You can only drive a failed vehicle away if its current MOT is still valid, or to take it to a repair or a pre-booked test. The full rules are set out in the GOV.UK retest guidance.

Check last year's advisories

Advisories are items that passed the MOT but are close to needing work, and they can turn into failures at the next test. You can see your vehicle's past advisories by entering the registration on the GOV.UK MOT history checker. If anything was flagged last time, mention it when you book and we can take a look before the test.

MOT Questions

When does a vehicle need its first MOT?

Cars and vans need their first MOT when they’re three years old, then every year after that.

You can have an MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current one runs out and still keep the same renewal date. Booking a few weeks ahead leaves time to sort any repairs before the deadline.

You can, and a lot of our customers book their MOT alongside their annual service so the vehicle only needs to come in once.

Only to a pre-booked MOT test, or to a garage for repairs it needs to pass. The vehicle still has to be roadworthy, and you can be fined if it isn’t.
